It wasn’t so long ago that ecologically-minded car shoppers really didn’t have a choice when it came to purchasing a hybrid vehicle. Over the last few years, however, most of the top name automobile manufacturers have an entry in this growing market segment. Following is a comparison of two of the mid-size hybrid leaders – the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and the 2012 Ford Fusion Hybrid. When compared side-by-side, it becomes no contest. The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is the hands-down winner.
First, when selecting which new vehicle to purchase out of a certain class, the two primary factors buyers are usually concerned most about is styling and price. If you’ve already determined that a mid-sized hybrid car is the vehicle type that will best meet the needs and wants of you and your family, both the Sonata Hybrid and the Fusion Hybrid are popular choices. However, the two offer distinctly different styling and distinctly different price points.
The 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid just received a redesign in 2011. The fluidic Hyundai styling makes it look sleek and sexy. The raked roofline and sculptured sides give it an aggressive look, more akin to a sports car than a mid-size sedan. The Sonata styling is elegant and distinctive, whereas the Ford Fusion’s styling is… not.
The Fusion is bland in comparison. Side-by-side, the Ford Fusion Hybrid is hum-drum, even boring. When you think “hybrid,” you think high-tech. The Fusion’s exterior definitely does not evoke a high- tech feeling. In fact, it looks like every other mid-sized sedan that has come out in recent years. Take the name plate off of it and car buyers would be hard-pressed to say for sure which car it is. It’s not surprising that Ford plans on a complete exterior facelift for the 2013 Fusion, but right now it simply can’t compete with the far more attractive Hyundai Sonata Hybrid.
Of course, when you get past the looks, the price tag is often another top consideration for car buyers. The numbers definitely add up in favor of the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. The MSRP for the Sonata Hybrid is almost $3,000 less than a comparably equipped Fusion. That’s a savings of more than 10 percent. In addition, the Hyundai Sonata’s newly announced lifetime battery pack warranty, further reduces ownership costs – should the pricey battery pack fail and need to be replaced and recycled. With better looks and a smaller price tag, it’s not surprising that they Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is the hybrid of choice for so many mid-sized car buyers.

Hybrid cars, once a rare sight, are becoming more and more popular, especially as fuel prices continue to rise. However, one of the fears car buyers have had is centered is the expense of having to replace the crucial battery packs in hybrid vehicles. Batteries eventually die out. This potential expense of having to replace the battery pack, plus pay for recycling of the old battery pack, is perceived to be such a significant drawback, many car shoppers don’t even consider purchasing a hybrid. Hyundai has now eliminated that concern with a lifetime warranty for their 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid battery packs.
Hyundai announced that they would be offering the lifetime warranty on the lithium-polymer battery packs for the 2012 Sonata Hybrid, due to the low failure rate. John Krafcik, Hyundai Motor America President and CEO, stated that there was little degradation, even after the Sonata Hybrid powertrain had been tested for over 300,000 miles.
The new Sonata Hybrid battery pack warranty will supposedly be for the life of the car. Cars.com reports, that Hyundai will replace the battery pack and cover all recycling costs, should the battery fail. Full details on this new warranty, however, are still to come.
The company has yet to say if Hyundai Sonata Hybrid’s previously purchased will be covered under this new battery pack warranty. Also, there has been no information on if this lifetime warranty will cover other hybrid-related components, such as the power control unit or the hybrid starter generator. In addition, an exact effective date has yet to be given as well. Although, Hyundai spokespeople have announced these details will be provided soon.
Prior to this announcement, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid featured an industry leading ten-year, 100,000-mile warranty for all hybrid components. This included items such as the generator, transmission and the battery pack. In addition, all Hyundai models include a five-year, 60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and a ten-year, 100,000 mile powertrain warranty, one of the best warranties in the industry. Adding a lifetime battery pack warranty to the Sonata Hybrid, will definitely set Hyundai apart from the other vehicles in this increasingly competitive market.
Most mid size and full size family sedans built today are worthy of consumer’s dollars. The margin that separates the best from the worst is pretty small in today’s technology driven era where information on improving performance is available to all manufacturers and enables them to build a truly quality product. So when comparing sedans on warm dry pavement, where most comparisons are made, things look pretty similar. But what about matching them up in inclement weather? How do they respond in torrential downpours or in ice storms or when the roads have not yet been plowed and there is 5 inches of snow to contend with?
